FINAL EXAM WRITING 9

Earth Shots:

1) Aral Sea- The changes occurred because of the fact that the water was needed to irrigate millions of acres of land for cotton and rice. More than 60% of the water was lost. Climate was reportedly shifted. Crop fields were diminished. Hotter, drier, summers and colder, longer, winters.
2) Lake Chad- Changed occurred because of the lack of rain and the drought that came about. Impact on the environment was that it turned from a lake into a desert. In the 1950s the lake raised enough to flood out irrigation systems. Population increased when the lake was high.
3) Brazilian rainforest- Approximately 30% of the worlds tropical forests are in Brazil, however changes occurred because of systematic cutting of the rainforest. The impact of the cutting down resulted in taking away the homes of animals and cutting down plants.
4) Filchner Ice Shelf- Changes occurred here because of the breaking of the Ice into the sea. It caused three large ice bergs on the environment. The population wasn’t much to begin with.
5) Ecology of War-Iraq- Cause of change included destruction of marshes. Impact on the environment was beginning to change because of all the irrigating that was occurring. Irrigation had an impact on the culture as well.
6) Monarch Butterfly colonies- Changes of the land. Population rose to about 20 million. The acres climate grew to much warmer and dryer than it ever was.
7) Growth of Beijing- The difference in the pictures is the red increases. The red represented the natural and agricultural vegetation. There wasn’t much housing, which allowed more agriculture.
8) Chernonobyl- It’s pinker in the 1992 picture than the 1986 picture because of the more natural vegetation that has taken over the fields. There wasn’t a high population of humans, but a very high population for animals.
9) Mangrove Forests in Senegal- In 1955, there was no water. In 1992, there was grass and water. Certain plants died, and some new plants grew. The same went with animals. More fish now live in the water.
10) Strip-mining- Olio- As the years went, more mines came. Many plants died once the Appalachian Mountains pushed upward; streams flowed, which allowed the swamps to grow. This stopped population.
11) Mt. St. Helens- less and less snow and ash population decreased once the volcanic blast occurred.
12) Great Salt Flood- Utah- The lake increasing decreased human population and increased animals, (mostly fish).
