The Violet

New Jersey’s state flower is the violet. The violet is a close relative to a European flower, the pansy. The violet was originally used in medicine and cooking. These flowers can spread easily if given the right care.

The American Goldfinch

New Jersey’s beautiful state bird is the American Goldfinch. This beautiful bird was adopted by New Jersey on June 27, 1935. A male Goldfinch has a bright yellow body with black wings, black tail, and a black top. A female’s color has a greenish yellow body with a brown wing and a brown tail. This bird’s favorite food is thistle seeds, but it also eats dandelions. They live in fields, thickets, grassland orchards and nearby trees.
